“I know you may not feel like a success right now, but remember to keep dressing for it.” I knew my mentor was right; she had weathered many of the storms I was in and she was still standing…and stylish. Initially, I suited up and put on a façade of confidence and normalcy. Yet, maintaining this image was exhausting. In my weakness, God showed me a better, easier way. My journal marks the exact turning point for me:
“May 21, 2021: Put on your victory clothes (Colossians 3:12-15) and not your defeat clothes (Colossians 3:8).”
The verses from Colossians remind us to “clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” These traits serve as our spiritual wardrobe, shaping our mindset and interactions. Donning these daily since, I feel as if I am wearing a protective layer against negativity and self-doubt.
The verses encourage us also to “bear with each other and forgive one another.” This is not an optional accessory, but a vital part of our emotional wardrobe. Holding onto grievances can weigh us down, while forgiveness lightens our load. I know firsthand how liberating this choice can be.
In contrast, the “defeat clothes” mentioned in Colossians 3:8—anger and other forms of negativity—can feel so heavy we can’t step into our true value and potential.
